Whenever I hear this phrase being in the flow, I pretty much thought things happening without any planning or action taken. But just ruminating over it, felt it is more than that. Let me see how I can apply in practical life and see if it holds good. I prefer my analogies to farming. That seems to have factors similar to most life situations. Individual effort and then this dependency on external factors, totally not under the control of the farmer.
So the saying goes – “Make hay when the sun shines“.
Now, one has to ACT. There is NO question. What action to perform and when it is performed makes a huge difference in its outcome. We all know this phrase – Right Decision at the Right Time brings about Right Results.
An experienced farmer KNOWS the nature’s cycle. So he prepares the field and sows the seed right before the rain. He waits for the sun to make the harvest. Now he does his part and leaves the rest to the nature.
This is Being in the flow …..
Having a deeper understanding of things that are around you and their nature and operating in harmony to make the most out of it. Here the farmer seems to have limited choice or no choice at all. But why even one needs choice, if everything around you can be used to your most advantage. Most of our ancestors before the era of technology have lived this way. So wise and connected with everything around them.
Here is the crux of the matter – for that, one needs to STUDY & KNOW the things and their nature.
To me we have LOST that art or skill or we are so DUMB and LAZY. We are NOT 100% sure what to do, when to do, we don’t have any deep knowledge or understanding of anything that we use or operate in our lives. So we need choices may be we will get lucky. 🙂
For instance let us say the simplest mundane task – choosing a meal – no idea what it is made of, how it is made and where all the ingredients come from how they are grown. So we depend on the taste and how we feel good about it and make a choice. Poor souls! I mean the way we live our lives are very Scary. We have systems in place so they are idiot proof – for us ignorants 🙂
So to me going with the flow means, one should have a VERY deep understanding of the Nature and operate in harmony with it. No friction, everything just flows as per the universal Laws. You steer your kayak as you ride through the river, constantly being in the present and having the flexibility to change as the river changes its course. Constant interaction ….
This is another thought in me, where even the conscious effort, the farmer preparing the soil is no more an effort at all. Meaning he is part and parcel of the cycle of Nature. The clouds bring the rain, the sun provides the heat and the farmer prepares the soil. In this view, it is more of this Universe’s operation. All the elements play their respective part. So seamless now it is not even a task or a duty anymore.
This I think is Truly Being In The Flow ….
But I want to know what it mean to You ……
