Every waking moment – every thought, word and action seems to bring up this question. Especially in these last few months, the world seems to be one of the most dangerous places for its own inhabitants – the Humans. NOT because of the Natural catastrophes, but by the hand of our own Brothers and Sisters! Where did we go wrong???
Even going back in history, way back into the BC era, Buddha admitted that HE failed to stop wars which killed thousands of people even in his own country. All he taught was to focus on improving individually and develop a sense of compassion for our fellow beings.
At a very rational level this seems to be quite a challenge because we all know that we possess enough intelligence to resolve most issues and live a happy life. But then why are we in this situation? When I sit and mull over it, I realize we are all driven by our beliefs more than rational thinking.
For instance, I see a Butterfly caught in a spider’s web, and I believe I am a compassionate person – so let’s say that I release the butterfly. Haven’t I interfered with nature and caused the spider to starve? So what should I do? What is right and what is wrong? What is moral and immoral?
Life seems to be more than what we “think.” If we saw the whole picture then maybe we could come to some conclusion. For instance, when a butterfly is struggling to break free from its cocoon, which is when the miracle happens, the struggle actually pumps body fluid into its wings making them bigger and stronger. If someone without this knowledge tried to do something “good” and helped break open the cocoon, the butterfly would die. So Good Will and Compassion alone can’t fix our issues – we should have wisdom and deep awareness of “Cause and Effect”.
Unless we increase our awareness, become wiser, and go beyond our narrow thinking and belief systems, we will remain like children trying to fix a leaky bucket by pouring more water into it. That effort is a waste. I see the WISDOM in great spiritual Teachers; they insisted on personal purification. If all of us could live a Simple and Pure Life with compassion, that in itself will be a soothing balm.
Right and wrong, moral and immoral, good and bad are so relative and transitory. As tiny human beings in the scope of the entire universe, we are not able to grasp the operation of the universe as a whole. However, when we embody more awareness and humility we will STOP adding more misery and confusion to what already exists there.
So my Spiritual Teachers advice is to develop – “Correct Thinking, Right Understanding and an Honest approach to Life.” Yes, some basics needs to be corrected if at all we want our race to flourish. Whenever I have my quiet moments I drive this thought deep in me to integrate in myself.
