Surprisingly it was a warm day; Chris and I hadn’t realized just how warm until we started hiking in Pyramid Mountain Park. We always look for challenges, to do something different, so we decided to take the “trail less traveled” to reach the Falls. As we headed out of the parking lot we actually had difficulty finding the start of the trail. We probably walked 500 feet and ended up nowhere; then walked back and forth a couple of times and in my head I thought, “Hmmm… We are doing something wrong. Let me quiet my intellectual mind and strictly follow the signs – the Trail markers.” As soon as we tuned IN, we were able to see the signs and we were on our way. This trail seemed hardly ever hiked and at times the path was not very clear, demanding full attention to keep track of where we were headed.
After a bit we came to a clearance and in front of us was a steep climb. I was so surprised to see there were stone steps leading up the slope. Someone else had obviously spent a great deal of time constructing these steps, and they made all the difference – they made it easy for us to ascend. My mind drifted in wonder – how everything in life that is Needed has already been put in place for us. All that is asked of me is to follow the signs. Hmmm, there comes the problem – following the signs.
Being from India I was not familiar with marked hiking trails, so I don’t really know how to use the markers and maps. Now if you left me alone in Pyramid Mountain Park I would be totally lost, and anyone like Chris who knows how to interpret the markers and signs might be very surprised at my struggle.
To me, that is how most of us are leading our lives. The universe has placed all kinds of markers and signs around us, but we don’t have a clue of how to use them. In the Eastern belief, the Heart is the compass and our sensory organs are for navigation. But somehow most of us are using all our faculties in the wrong way. We use our sensory organs to go after things which are brilliant and glowing, things which smell and taste good, things which feel pleasurable – completely ignoring the warnings from our own heart time and again.
All we have to do is quiet the mind and listen to the heart. Our heart has a complete Map and Trail markers for a wonderful journey. Again, the journey could be up or down, difficult or smooth, but as long as we have the attitude to enjoy the journey itself, we will be amazed at all the wonderful things along the way…
Wow- it was a rugged, hard trail, but exposed so much hidden beauty!!!
