Especially when I had the 1st hand experience of watching the Mag-pie couples build their beautiful really large DOOM shaped nest right on the tree next to our Deck. I was stunned by the co-operation, co-ordination and getting ready for the family to come, well ahead of the time. They had 5 chicks. The parents feed them very well. One by one they left the nest as they got bigger and were ready to fly. They NEVER came back to the nest. The purpose of the nest was over. I thought that is pretty huge GOAL well planned and executed with a great success. Target achieved!
Now if I purely look at this concept of securing life and propagation, I didn’t find any difference between Humans and Animals. All living organism based on their own physical capacity and the environment they live in, seem to make very smart decision. The intelligence seems to be in ALL living organism to survive and propagate. So are we really special and superior, if so how? This was really bothering me a lot.
I started reading more looking for some answers, couldn’t find any. Fortunately I started attending lectures on Bhagwat Gita and Upanishad which are the very old sacred Indian scriptures. The very 1st session was bout Human Goals, PURUSHARTHA, PURUSHA – HUMAN + ARTHA – GOAL.! I was over excited, I might have heard the lecture over and over until every word got engraved in my brain
Now I have a pretty good understanding of Goals. How humans are indeed different and more advanced than other organisms on this Earth. I thought it might be nice to share that insight with all.
According to the scriptures there are 4 Main Goals of human.
The 2nd Goal is called KAMA. This is more towards seeking comfort, pleasure, entertainment, enjoyment etc. We can clearly see how these are more sought by Humans more than other organisms. Yes the deer’s when they visits us, prefer to rest under the shade, but won’t make an effort to create shade or won’t feel miserable if they don’t find one. We with our creative ability bring about what we want.
The 3rd Goal is called DHARMA. Humans have a greater understanding of cause and effect. What I sow today I will reap tomorrow. Such a simple, but profound TRUTH. This understanding enables one to act morally. Especially if you believe in incarnation then you do understand the deeds good or bad follow life after life until exhausted. So, one seeks doing his or her duty with the right attitude which is leading a DHARMIC life. So we volunteer to great cause. Again knowing you can influence your future immediate or next life. This again is very specific to humans because of our intellect which is absent in animals.
The last and the 4th goal is MOKSHA. Attain freedom by gaining self-knowledge.
Freedom from what? It was very interesting to hear the explanation.
We are so conditioned pretty much the 1st 3 goals – ARTHA-KAMA-DHARMA seem to be the way of life. And as we lead life we create likes/dislikes. We seek pleasure and avoid pain. We live life with a pretty agitated mind, constantly seeking and avoiding.
Without the understanding that this world of matter is very transient, we lean on it for security and protection. Health, Assets, Jobs, Relations etc etc which we know are not 100% stable. One bad cold can immobilize an athlete. A Wall Street crash may make a bilinear to popper over-night. Even the great CEO might lose his job over a controversy. A sweet relationship might become bitter over a small argument. So unpredictable and unreliable. And on top of it TIME the greatest illusion, makes things disappear over time, even the greatest civilizations are gone without a trace.
So what is permanent? What is reliable? Now we are in the path of self-enquiry. This is what the scripts call path towards self-knowledge. As one starts understanding that this world of matter is impermanent he or she starts to seek the TRUTH about what is permanent and how to achieve it. And that is the 4th and the Highest Goal of Human birth – MOKSHA!
And how do you achieve MOKSHA! Ha! A Million Dollar Question. The whole life has been gifted to us to find the TRUTH by ourselves. You are not alone, there are many great souls way ahead of us, if we really want to learn they have left a lot of trails to follow.
Choose your PATH wisely. Best wishes my dear fellow traveler…..
