Last night in our Book Study Group we read and discussed a passage from the first chapter ‘Domestication and Dream of the Planet’ from The Four Agreements. It was mind-boggling! The author, using simple statements, reveals the greatest tragedy of human race.
We are All domesticated right from our childhood – just like a dog or any other animal is domesticated. We were rewarded and punished based on how we followed or deviated from the values of our parents, usually the same values that our parents had inherited from their parents. As you and I grew up, at times we were fearful of punishment which sometimes came in a terrifying form of rejection. So, we started to conform to everything, even though deep down in our Heart we didn’t concur with those beliefs.
As this cocoon of beliefs was wrapped around us, we couldn’t help but live a life of falsehood, suffocated day by day with a false security. Question: As a rational human being, why can’t each of us analyze on a day to day basis regarding what is essential and truly good for us, rather than remaining stuck in a rut with cultural and traditional habits and living a hypocritical life? At times those codes and rituals are not even relevant in the current conditions we live in, but still – we follow them anyway to avoid feeling the guilt of NOT doing them. It’s a misuse of our own self-creation power.
Each member of our discussion group shared their different belief systems, mostly coming from the Eastern culture point of view where women are the saviors of tradition, culture and how it affects our lives. It’s a real burden that we are not courageous enough to break some of the traditions and adapt to what is actually essential to make life better for all of us today. We were not looking at convenience, but what makes sense and is truly relevant.
If we could catch ourselves doing those activities and re-wire those beliefs, that would a great step towards freedom. It would also help save the next generation from going through this much pain.
How domesticated are you? Are you making an effort to move from conformity toward freedom?
