Last few months I had been attending Bhagavad Geeta classes, this is one of the most ancient and revered spiritual script in India. I was really inspired to learn and get a deeper understanding of the SELF. It was amazing how the scriptures (Vedanta and Bhagavad Geeta) focus on the Human mind. And identify the seed of all good and bad reside and are nourished in the Mind.
The simplest purpose of Meditation is to calm the Mind. We in our way of living don’t distinguish much of the subtle factors of the Mind. For instance Joy or Pure Happiness as per the scriptures is a mind immersed in a state of Peace. Most of the time we are all happy enjoying and yes we do have miserable times now and then this will be the response 99% of the time.
Let us examine it a little deeper. When I am watching a Foot Ball game and my favorite team is winning, I am excited, happy having a LOT of fun. Let us look at the state of mind – Anxious, tension, agitated, rivalry there is even this subtle fear what if some miraculous way what if the other team wins. At the physiological level my Blood pressure is raising, I might even sweat a bit and my muscles are tight!!! This we call it as excitement, fun, happiness. Such a thin line between my happiness and misery, if in case my team is to lose, I feel bitter and even angry, let down disappointed etc, etc. What a difference in our understanding of Happiness Vs Joy that is described in the scriptures.
So the bottom line is an agitated mind always looks way for survival, to preserve its identity. It is always fearful of everything around it. It raises the wall – looking at everything other that itself as Alien and intimidating. So we build Walls around our country, around our house, inside the house in the name of privacy and even our cells being to alienate one another at the peak of this self-identity. What we don’t notice is how these isolations make us more and more lonely, miserable and disease prone .
The most self-identified person will be a loner even if he is surrounded by a mass of people. He has built his mental wall so high he can’t even see the beauty of everything outside of it.
All of us have experienced this with, a pet which doesn’t have a Mind, a child whose Mind is still in development, a person who loves you unconditional where there is no barrier. You feel serene around them. You feel total acceptance and at ease as if your inner spirit is not contracted but rather expanded.
I was so baffled when I really understood this deeper truth. If there is a mental wall sooner or later IT WILL show up in the physical realm. A partition of a country, a divorce in a relationship, a heart-break, a terminal illness you name it. We look at the result and wonder what went wrong and where.
Kindness is the light
that dissolves all walls
between souls, families, and nations.
